How to Clean a Garage Door

Your garage door faces a fair share of exposure to the elements — that’s why washing it regularly is an important part of maintenance. Regular cleaning removes obvious debris, and it can also uncover dents and other issues requiring your attention. But what’s the best way to clean a garage door?

How Often Should You Clean Your Garage Door?

Most modern metal garage doors need to be cleaned and waxed at least twice a year. If your home is exposed to particularly harsh elements, such as high sun or road salt, you may want to consider waxing and washing your garage door quarterly. Plus, if your door is splashed with mud or otherwise dirtied in between cleanings, you’ll want to give it a quick wash to maintain your home’s curb appeal.
Waxing your door helps protect the finish, especially if your garage door is close to the road and gets road salt on it. Today, many homeowners use wax in spray form because it’s so easy to use. Just spray the wax on while the garage door is wet after a wash and wipe off with a clean, soft towel. Check your owner’s manual to ensure you’re buying the right wax for your garage door.

The Best Way to Clean a Garage Door

If you’re not sure how to clean metal garage doors, follow these basic steps:

  • Read the owner’s manual. Make sure you keep your warranty intact by following the directions in your manual.
  • Be gentle. Clean your door with a soft cloth, sponge or very soft bristle brush. Mild soap and warm water are ideal.
  • Choose soaps carefully. Look for non-toxic, mild and biodegradable cleaners or gentle dishwashing soap. Mix your cleaner with water to dilute it. If you need to clean up scuffs and want to use a stronger soap, test it on an inconspicuous area of the garage door first to ensure it does not damage the finish. Never use bleaches, scrubbers or harsh chemicals on your garage door.
  • Wash from top to bottom. Using the gentle soap and water mixture, start at the top of your garage to avoid streaks at the bottom. Wring your cloth or sponge often to avoid large pools of water. Be sure to get the sides and the decorative details of your door.
  • Be careful around electronic items. Never splash your garage door opener or any electrical components with water or soap.
  • Rinse your door thoroughly. Once you have washed your garage doors, rinse off extra soap and allow the surface to dry fully. You can use a garden hose to rinse the door.
  • Pay attention to the details, and follow directions for lubricating. In addition to cleaning the outside of the door, you’ll want to wash any windows on your door and the tracks of your garage door. You’ll also want to lubricate your garage door to keep it operating smoothly.
