Identifying Misalignment or Off-Track Garage Door
Off-track garage doors can be caused by broken rollers, worn cables or an impact from your car. Is your garage door off-track? Here’s what to look for:
- Uneven gaps when the door is closed: When closed, a properly aligned door should sit evenly on the ground without gaps. If you notice uneven spacing or a visible tilt, your door might have slipped off the track.
- Door sticks and does not open or close all the way: A garage door that moves slowly, gets stuck or requires extra effort to open and close might be off track. Bent or obstructed tracks create resistance, making the motor work harder than it should. Even if your door doesn’t latch, this is another sign.
- Grinding, scraping or squeaking sounds during operation: Unusual noises can indicate that the garage door is not aligned properly. These sounds signify friction between components, often due to track issues.
- Visible damage to tracks: Check the tracks themselves for any visible bends, dents or damage.
- Weather damage: Extreme weather can also affect metal tracks, leading to warping or shifting.
