Cost to Install a New Awning

Are you thinking about installing a new awning for your home or business? An awning can be a fantastic way to increase the value of your property. It’s an opportunity to draw positive attention to your business and a way to protect your porch from troublesome weather elements like rain or hot sun. It can protect your home’s interior, as well.

About 40 percent of the excess heat that generates in your home comes from the sun’s rays beaming through the windows, and a good awning can block many of those rays before they can build up, keeping your property cool and saving you on cooling costs.

How Much Is It to Install a New Awning?

There is no one answer to how much your new awning installation will cost. Keep in mind that you must pay for the awning itself, any extras or special features you want and the labor cost.

Again, exact prices may vary, but the national average cost for installing a new awning that is 16 feet to 30 feet wide is $175 to $300. If you want an electric motor for your retractable awning, hard wiring in that motor will run you another $80 to $150, for a total of $255 to $400.

Keep in mind, however, this is without any extras — other than the motor. Here’s how it breaks down.

  • The Awning: Obviously, a sizable chunk of the cost is from the awning itself. The cost of the awning is made up of multiple parts. You must pay for the fabric cover, the frame, installation brackets, the retracting mechanism and possibly a remote control.
  • Labor: You also have to pay someone to install your awning. You could try installing the awning yourself, but you could damage it, hurt yourself or get extremely frustrated trying to get it on correctly. We recommend a professional installation, especially since you may be looking at a labor cost that is quite reasonable. Your installer will usually charge around $40 to $60 an hour for labor, and it’s conceivable they could install your awning in just a few hours or less.
  • Extras: The extras are where the real costs of your retractable awning come in. You don’t have to get any extras for your awning, but to get the best use of it for your purposes, you’ll probably want some. Some of the most popular awning extras include mildew-resistant treatment for the fabric and side curtains to prevent excessive sun from coming in.

In sum, you can get and install a new retractable awning for as little as $175, but it’s unlikely to serve your purposes. Paying more for your awning can be a very worthwhile investment, as the more you put into your awning, the more useful it will be and the longer it is likely to last.

For example, if you were to get a 16’ wide retractable awning with a motor and remote control, a heavy-duty lateral arm, solution-dyed acrylic fabric with anti-microbial yarns and water-resistant and UV rays-resistant coating, you’re probably looking at an all-in cost of a little under $2000. However, you’ll have an awning that’s likely to last a long time and give you all the convenience and protection you could need.
